EBay fresh new toy on the bench (er..table), WWII vintage aircraft general coverage shortwave radio. RAX-1 unit 3, CG-46117, tube type, covers 7 MHZ to 27 MHZ in 5 bands. It was built to run on 28 or 12 volts DC from the planes batteries. This one was missing the dynamotor and rear cover. Some of the wiring was hanging out and an "extra" PCB with a 0A2 on it was stuck in where the fuse and choke should be. It wasn't connected. Most of the wiring looked original. Some wires were cut that shouldn't have been. Looked like a failed conversion to 120 VAC (regular house plug). The normal old school 1950s conversion would be to pull the transformer out of some old tube TV or tube radio and transplant in. Not so easy to find nowadays. Everything is sold state now. Wrong voltages. I decided to use transformer types still available to electricians and connect them back to back. 120 VAC in , step down to 12 volts then step back up to 240 VAC. The 12 volts feed the tube's heaters and the 240 volts feed the tube's plates.
